Best free Android apps 2013

Best free Android apps 2013

The open source nature of Google's OS means there are plenty of fantastic apps for Android to be found.
And most of the good stuff on Android is free, thanks to the work of developers who do it for love alone.
So here's our pick of the top free Android apps you should install.

1. Seesmic

There are many Twitter apps on Android - and Twitter itself shook up the scene with the launch of its own-brand app - but we're sticking withSeesmic. Offering support for multiple accounts, a home page widget showing latest tweets and an incredibly slick and professional design, it's one of the finest examples of app development out there today.

2. Facebook for Android

Facebook for Android is lacking in features compared to Facebook itself, but a recent update added Inbox support to the Android app, finally allowing its users to communicate in almost real time. The app's fast and stable, with a simplicity that reminds you of the old days when using Facebook used to be bearable.

3. National Rail Enquiries

After the original free, third-party National Rail apps went paid-for, National Rail has finally brought out its own free app. National Rail Enquiriesenables you to check live train times, plan your journeys, and get notifications of delays. On first use, the app prompts you to enter a home and work train station, and then you can use the 'Get me home' button to see the next available trains.

4. UK Jobs

Hey, times are hard and you've got to pay for your oppressive monthly mobile phone contract somehow. Offering a fully searchable database of current UK job vacancies, UK Jobs, which pulls in its data from independent employment site 1job.co.uk is, a slightly cumbersome but useful and non-governmental tool.

5. Hotmail/Outlook

Microsoft has teamed up with developer SEVEN to offer an official Hotmail app for Android, which gives users a simple, clean interface, push notification support and even lets you manage multiple Hotmail accounts from within the app. If your email needs haven't yet been assimilated by Google, it's a useful option. It's since been rebranded as the Outlook app, in keeping with Microsoft's changes to its mail site.

6. Google Sky Map

A stunning app that renders Patrick Moore obsolete, by using your phone's orientation tools to give you an accurate representation of the stars and planets on your screen. Point your phone at the sky, then learn what constellations are visible and if that's a UFO or just Venus. Google Sky Map even works indoors, if you're not keen on getting cold.

7. Layar

The stunning augmented reality app Layar has recently gone commercial, adding an online shop that allows users to buy AR content such as travel guides, local house price apps and much more. But you're still able to use the numerous free Layers to pop data up over real-world locations, delivering a satisfying futuristic experience.

8. Foursquare

The social media darling Foursquare is represented in fine form on Android, with the Google app offering easy one-click check-ins, integrated Google Maps for a seamless Google-branded experience and home page shortcut options to all your favourite places.

9. WordPress for Android

WordPress for Android started out as independent creation wpToGo, before WordPress decided it liked it so much it bought it up - hiring the maker to develop it in-house. It's very feature-packed, with the latest version offering full integration with other apps, letting you spin content and send it directly to the app for easy updating. It could do with more image insertion tools, though.

10. Google Goggles

A bit of a novelty, in that Google Goggles lets you take photos and have Google analyse them and come back with a search results page for what it thinks you're looking at. However, the app's main use is as a QR code reader, which lets you scan barcodes for quick access to apps and whatever data people choose to embed in the odd little data squares.

11. Winamp

Yes, the same Winamp from a decade ago. It's had an Android app for some time, with recent updates adding support for iTunes, Mac syncing, plenty of music streaming options, new release lists and Shoutcast integration for radio support. It's a fine, free media player.

12. Samsung ChatOn

There are plenty of messaging tools on Android, but Samsung's beats many of them by offering multi-platform support - with clients even available for older Samsung non-smart feature phones. It could be the ideal way to keep in touch with an out of touch relative. More "with it" users will be able to use its drawing, image sharing and social networking features.

13. Skyfire 3.0

The USP of the Skyfire browser is that it supports Flash content, popping up a little window when it detects an embedded YouTube video or something similar. The actual Flash business is handled by Skyfire's server, which does all the computery stuff, then sends the file to your handset. A bit clunky on slower Android phones, but it works like a dream on models with faster processors.Despite the arrival of Flash with Android 2.2, this is still relevant for those on phones and Android versions not able to support Adobe's Flash Player.

14. BBC News

While the BBC's Android iPlayer app is a bit on the disappointing side, the corporation's BBC News app is much more refined. There's a stylish grid-based front page, plus you're able to swipe from left to right to switch between stories in your chosen specialist category. A recent update also added a couple of Home screen widgets, too, plus the ability to submit your own news tips, as if the BBC was a small blog clamouring for content.

15. RAC Traffic

An official production of the motoring organisation, RAC Traffic is dead simple - it guesstimates your location via the mobile signal, then pops up the current traffic alerts for your area. It's much better than having to listen to the radio for the odd update about arterial blockages.

16. Swype

The odd line-drawing alternate keyboard Swype is a love-it or hate-it kind of thing, with the significant amount of re-learning required to make the most of it quite offputting to some users. Once you're familiar with the idea, though, it's genius - with advanced prediction options further speeding your line-typing. Swype is not available through the Android Market - the only way to install is is via a direct download from the maker.

17. Evernote

After the Android version of Dropbox, the next best solution for keeping all your 'business' in one place is Evernote - which lets you stash and sync all your text notes, voice memos and files on your phone and access them through a desktop computer.

18. Flickr

As well as supporting Flickr uploading, this app also lets you capture photos from within the app and comes complete with a set of filters, so you can hipsterise your life with ease. It supports sharing with Twitter and Facebook as well, so your other, non-photo-nerd friends can enjoy the results of today's snapping session.

19. Last.fm

The subscription-based thrills of Last.fm open up a world of music streaming on your mobile. You have to 'buy in' to the odd Last.fm way of organising things and suggesting new music, but if you're easily led and not restricted by bandwidth it's a superb tool.

Report Your Stolen Mobile Phone

Report Your Stolen Mobile Phone: Before It Gets Used For Terrorist Motives

Mobile lostTerrorism is one of the major issues Pakistan is facing these days. Terrorists are using many means to spread terrorism in Pakistan. The purpose of writing this article is to let our readers know about the calamity they may run into, due to their lost/stolen cell phones. If your mobile is lost, or has been stolen, you must know that thed device can possibly be used in any terrorism related activity.
Terrorists contact each other through cell phones mostly, and these cell phones are mostly stolen. Whenever investigation agencies investigate any terrorism activity, e.g any bomb blast, they find many clues, one of the major ones is a mobile phone, most of the time, and the SIM cards of the terrorists.
As mentioned above, most of those mobile phones used in such activities are stolen, and so are the SIM Cards within those phones, so security agencies look to find the owner of the cell phones and  SIM cards. Now you know where you could fall, eventually. Scary, isn’t it?
Here’s How to Block SIM
You must call the helpline of the cellular company, which your stolen SIM belongs. Let them know that your phone has been stolen so that they block the SIM rightaway. They are going to ask you these details:
  • Your Name
  • Your SIM Number
  • Your National Identity Card Number
  • Your Address
Or you may visit any nearest franchise of that telecom carrier and get this done.
Here’s How to Block Phone
To report and block your stolen phone, you must know the IMEI  number of your phone. If you don’t know it, note it down by dialing *#06# (if your phone is not stolen yet).
But if the phone is stolen, find out your stolen mobile phone’s box, and you’ll find its IMEI number at the back of the box. Once you know your IMEI number, it’s easy.
First thing, call 15, and report to the police.
Call PTA at their toll-free number 0800-25625 and tell them all the details.
Or you can fill a complaint form to Citizen Police by visiting this link: http://www.cplc.org.pk/theft_form.php
That’s it. You’re much safer now. :)

Imaan Hazir Mazari Becomes Victim Of Election 2013 Campaign?

Imaan Hazir Mazari Becomes Victim Of Election 2013 Campaign?

Pakistani Politics is really weird and unnatural and personality defamation is a normal thing in our country. Many decent people stay away from this dirty politics due to opponents’ immoral actions and statements. Nowadays, all followers of parties are busy in election 2013 campaign. Some are busy on Roads while others are propagating party ideas on social media. Almost all parties are focusing on social media campaigns to spread their message in youth. The most social media campaigns are spreading negative pictures of opponent parties. Workers of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf are exposing Nawaz Sharif past scandals and Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz’s fans are sharing Imran Khan past pictures. Same steps are following Pakistan Peoples Party, Jamaat e Islami and other political parties.
In spite of this, most terrible thing is involving families of politicians in this calumniate campaigns. There are several campaigns going on to defame a politician by spreading personal pictures of his/her family. In past we have observed controversial pictures of and most were female politicians. Shameful Pictures of Kashmala Tariq, Shazia Marri, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Imran Khan and Maryam Nawaz are some recent examples. Most of pictures were deliberately edit and shared on social media.
The same scene has happened now with Shireen Mazari’s daughter Imaan Hazir Mazari. Though she is no more part of PTI, some opponents are trying to damage Shireen’s political image by using these types of cheap tactic. Imaan left PTI last year and she is not much active politically. On other hand, her mother Shireen Mazari recently rejoined PTI and then some unknown culprits started defaming campaign against her,
Some of pictures edited while some are taken from Imaan’s social networking account. I am just sharing these pictures without any offense against any political party.
See pictures below.

UNEXPLAINED AMAZING ARTIFACTS

THE WORLD'S 10 MOST AMAZING ARTIFACTS THAT REMAIN UNEXPLAINED

The word "artifact" comes from the Latin phrase art factum. There are lots of archeological artifacts that prove that the past of the Earth could be much more different than we used to believe. Below are some of these puzzling artifacts:

№1. The Grooved Spheres

Over the past few decades, miners in South Africa have been digging up mysterious metal spheres. The origin of the spheres is unknown. They are approximately one inch in diameter. Two types of spheres were found: the first one is made of solid bluish metal with white spots, the second one is hollowed out and filled with a spongy white substance. Surprisingly, each found sphere belongs to the Precambrian period, i.e. 2.8 billion years old! It remains unknown who made them and for what purpose.

№2. The Dropa Stones

In 1938 an archeological expedition made a surprising discovery in the caves of the Bayan-Kara-Ula mountains (China). Hundreds of stone disks were found on the cave floor. Each stone, approximately nine inches in diameter, had a cut out circle in the center and also they were engraved with spiral grooves. The spiral grooves were composed of tiny hieroglyphics that showed the incredible story of spaceships from some distant world that had crash-landed in the mountains. Those ships were run by the people who called themselves Dropa and their remains were found in the cave.

№3. The Ica Stones

In 1930 a local farmer gave a strange stone to Dr. Javier Kabrela. Then, Javier Kabrela collected more than 1,100 of such stones known as the Ica Stones. The stones are engraved. The most astonishing etchings clearly depict dinosaurs. While skeptics consider the Ica Stones a hoax, their authenticity has not yet been neither proved nor disproved.

№4. The Antikythera Mechanism

Divers raised a lot of marble and bronze statues from a wreck. There was a strange mechanism composed of a number of wheels among the findings. Writing on the box indicates that it was made in 80 BC. However such a complex device could not exist until 1575! It is still unknown who constructed this amazing tool 2,000 years ago.

№5. The Baghdad Battery

This puzzling thing was found in the ruins of the Parthian village, existed roughly between 248 BC and 226 AD. The device consisted of a 5-1/2 inch clay vessel. A copper cylinder was found inside, with an oxidized iron rod inside the cylinder. Experts concluded that the device only needed to be filled with acid or alkaline liquid to produce an electrical charge. But the battery technology was invented only in 1800!

№6. The Coso Artifact

A rock was found in the mountains of California in 1961, and an object made of white porcelain was found inside. There was shiny metal in the center. X-rays revealed a tiny spring in the end, that looked like a spark plug. The artifact itself was defined by experts as a spark plug dated the 1920's. Unfortunately, the Coso Artifact was lost and can not be fully researched. Is there a reasonable explanation of the artifact? How could the spark plug be in the 500 000-year-old rock?

№7. Ancient Model Aircraft

There are artifacts belonging to ancient Egyptian and Central American cultures that are surprisingly similar to modern aircrafts. The Egyptian artifact, found in 1898, is a six-inch wooden object that looks like a model airplane, with fuselage, wings and tail. Experts believe that this object is so aerodynamic that it actually can glide. The small object found in Central America is made of gold and could easily be considered a model glider, or even a space shuttle.
hieroglyphics

№8. Giant Stone Balls of Costa Rica

In the 1930's workers encountered incredible objects in Costa Rica: a number of stone balls. Many of them had a perfect spherical form. They ranged in size from as small as a tennis ball to a huge 8 feet in diameter sphere that weighed 16 tons! No one knows who made them, for what purpose, and the most puzzling question: how such an ideal spherical form could be made.

№9. Impossible Fossils

A fossil of a human hand print was found in limestone (age about 110 million years). A fossil of a human finger was found in the Canadian Arctic that is also dated 100-110 million years old. A fossil trace of a sandal was found near Delta, Utah in schistose clay, estimated at 300-600 million years old.

№10. Out-of-Place Metal Objects

People did not exist 65 million years ago. So how can science explain the semi-ovoid metallic tubes dug out of the Cretaceous Cretaceous (age 65 million years) in France? In 1885 a piece of coal was cracked, and a metal cube was found inside that obviously seemed to be man-made. In 1912 workers at an electric plant broke a large piece of coal, and iron powder poured out. Nails were found in a sandstone block from the Mesozoic Era. And there are many, many more such artifacts.
What conclusions can we draw from the above? Here are some ideas:
Sentient beings existed much, much earlier than we could imagine.
Some kind of sentient beings and civilizations existed on the Earth much earlier than history reports.

Do Snakes Have Bones?

Do Snakes Have Backbones?

Yes, Snakes have backbones, and other bones. It is hard to believe that, given that snakes are so flexible that they can tie themselves in knots, but they are reptiles, and all reptiles, being vertebrates, by definition have backbones.
Only lower animals such as insects, worms, arachnids (spiders) lack bones. Many invertebrates like insects or crabs have a stiff exoskeleton that protects their internal organs. Once you move to more advanced groups, like fish, reptiles, or mammals, they are all vertebrates.
So how come snakes are so flexible? This is actually because they have very flexible vertebrae, and they have many more of them than mammals, up to 250 in some species. Most of the vertebrae are attached to two ribs, all the way to the cloaca. Caudal vertebrae don't have ribs, in rattlesnakes they are enlarged and fused, forming the rattle.

Snakes Also Have Very Specialised Skulls

Their backbones are not the only parts of the skeleton of these very specialised reptiles that have adapted to their lifestyle. One of the amazing things about the large constrictor snakes such as pythons, is how they manage to swallow prey which is much wider than they are.
Snake skulls have highly mobile jaws and the ligaments connecting the upper and lower jaws are very elastic. This allows the snake to open its mouth much wider than the narrow head would suggest, so it can envelop and slowly ingest prey much wider than it is.

Pink Moon Eclipse

Slooh Telescope To Broadcast Pink Moon Eclipse

For those living in the Eastern Hemisphere, the first lunar eclipse of 2013 will be taking place on Thursday during the Pink Moon. This partial eclipse of the Moon will be visible in its entirety from eastern Europe, Africa, central Asia and western Australia. However, it will not be visible in North America unless you watch Slooh’s live broadcast.
The Slooh Space Camera will be broadcasting live feed of the partial lunar eclipse free to the public, starting April 25 at noon PDT.
“I am very excited to be a part of the lunar eclipse broadcast,” said Dr. Lucie Green, frequent BBC contributor and solar researcher based at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory. “Having been a part of several Slooh broadcasts, including the June 2011 Total Lunar Eclipse, 2012 Annular Eclipse, and 2012 Total Solar Eclipse, I always look forward to seeing these events live on Slooh.”
Slooh says it will also be bringing the live broadcast to viewers who have downloaded the free Slooh iPad app. iPad users will be able to have an interactive experience during the partial eclipse as well.
“The free Slooh iPad app is a great way for individuals to experience Slooh’s broadcasts and understand how the night sky works,” said Slooh President Patrick Paolucci.
April’s full moon is traditionally called the Pink Moon after one of spring’s earliest blooming flowers, the wild phlox, or the herb moss pink. According to the Farmers’ Almanac, other names for the spring time moon include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and the Full Fish Moon. The Full Fish Moon derives from coastal tribes because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.
Last year, viewers in the Northern Hemisphere got to experience a “Strawberry Moon” eclipse. The Strawberry Moon is the full moon that takes place every year in June. This moon is named after the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries during June. The Transit of Venus followed this eclipse the next day.
The first solar eclipse this year will be taking place on May 10. This will be an annular eclipse visible in Australia, New Zealand, eastern Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and the Gilbert Islands. North America will get its first view of a lunar eclipse May 25, when the moon will put on a roughly 30-minute show.

Evidence Bigfoot Exists!

Pacific Northwest May Finally Have Evidence Bigfoot Exists

Lawrence LeBlond for redOrbit.com – Your Universe Online
Not since Roger Patterson’s 1967 encounter has there been so much hype over the possible discovery of Sasquatch, better known as Bigfoot.
In the deep woods of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in the Pacific Northwest there could be a very real Bigfootlurking in the night, belting out its blood-curdling serenades to all those who wish to lend a listening ear. And one local resident has garnered audio-proof that something unknown is calling out from the brushy swamp area east of Pendleton, Oregon.
The sounds emanating from the woods have been occurring since at least November and range in tone from high-pitched cries to deep-bodied roars. Sylvia Minthorn told The Oregonian newspaper that the late-night shrieks are so piercing that even the hair on grown men will stand at attention.
Several local sources have already attributed the noises to those of foxes or coyotes. But some local residents are not so sure, and believe what they are hearing are the cries of the Bigfoot.
“It’s causing an uproar around here,” said Minthorn, who lives in a tribal housing unit near the swamp, where she used to play as a child.
The shrilly-night cries have been captured by Colleen Chance, a tribal housing authority employee, who recorded them on her iPhone.
“It’s kind of spooky,” she said. “Some say it’s foxes, some say it’s a female coyote and some say it’s Sasquatch. I don’t know what it is.”
While everyone has their own opinions, so far no one has pinpointed the source. The Reservation covers some 178,000 acres and extends into northeastern Oregon’s Blue Mountains. About 1,500 people call the area home.
The night shrieks have been of concern to a number of residents, said Chance, who has taken several calls from locals who are fearful of what may be lurking in their backyards.
John Franken, the housing authority’s interim director, told The Oregonian that residents are struck with fear, and one man has even said his dog was too terrified to venture out for a walk because of the night noises.
Some rumors have spread quickly that the creature shrieking in the night is a young Bigfoot that had gotten separated from its family.
Bigfoot is the name given to a cryptid ape-like beast that purportedly stalks the forests of North America, with sightings reported in all 48 contiguous US states, Canada, and Alaska. Sightings of Bigfoot have also been reported in Mexico and in other countries around the world. In Asia, the Yeti is considered to be a close relative of America’s Sasquatch.
Most scientists discount the existence of Bigfoot and typically call it a combinative representation of folklore, misidentification and hoax, mainly due to the lack of physical evidence. While mainstream science concludes Bigfoot is a fantastical myth, some scientists have expressed interest in research of the creature’s supposed existence.
In most reports, Bigfoot is described as a large, hairy, ape-like, binary hominid, ranging from 6 to 10 feet tall and weighing in excess of 500 pounds. Most accounts report the animal covered in dark brown or dark reddish hair, but has been purportedly observed in black, gray and white hair as well.
Bigfoot gets its common name from the enormous size of its footprint, which has been found measuring up to 24 inches long and 8 inches wide. While most casts taken of the footprint have five toes—like all known apes—some casts have allegedly had digits ranging from two to six.
While there is no solid proof of the creature’s existence, many have taken it upon themselves to make detailed descriptions of the creature’s behavior; with most claiming it is omnivorous and mainly nocturnal.
While the scientific community largely debunks Bigfoot reports as hoaxes or misidentification, some Native American tribes, especially those of the Pacific Northwest, say that the creature is all too real. Stories of the hominids have been passed down from generation to generation in tribal cultures, so when the shrilly night cries first started emanating from the Reservation forests, it didn’t take locals long to formulate an opinion on the source of those calls.
Carl Sheeler, wildlife program manager for the tribes, said that the calls could also be attributed to cougars, which are known to let out hair-raising noises, and so too are foxes.
“And the first time a person hears a fox calling in the night, kind of echoing around the canyons, it raises the hair on the back of your neck,” Sheeler said. “That wetland is a perfect place to have an echoing call sound eerie,” Sheeler added.
Sylvia Minthorn’s uncle, Armand Minthorn, a tribal spiritual leader, said that he found a huge man-like footprint several years ago measuring about 18 inches long while hunting in the Blue Mountains.
Those mountains, and the surrounding woods, have long been rife with tales of Sasquatch ever since a cyclist from Walla Walla tribe found a 19-inch bare footprint in 1966 along Tiger Canyon Road.
And not even controversial hoaxing has been able to disrupt the Bigfoot believers in the region.
In 2002, Ray Wallace, of Centralia, Washington, claimed that he had been using strap-on wooden feet to leave large footprints around the West since 1958. According to his relatives, who made the information public at his funeral, Wallace was the source of most Bigfoot stories in the region for nearly 40 years.
